Museums Worcestershire cares for the museum collections of the city of Worcester and the county of Worcestershire, for the benefit of residents and visitors today and for future generations tomorrow.
Worcestershire County’s collection reflects the cultural history of a quintessentially rural English county. It includes a nationally important collection of colourful gypsy caravans, beautiful costume & domestic history, archaeology, travel & transport and examples from significant industries including the Bromsgrove Guild.
The earliest parts of Worcester City’s collection are the Victorian natural history collections. The fine art collection complements these by deepening our interpretation of the landscape, both traditionally and through contemporary eyes. Worcester’s social history and archaeology collections demonstrate the human occupation, development and use of a typically English county town. It includes significant multi-layered excavation sites and objects from Worcester’s main industries of glove-, porcelain- and sauce- and vinegar-making.
Viewing the Collections
We display as much of the City and County collections as possible across our three museums, including our uniquely extensive Vardo caravan collection and approximately a sixth of the oil painting collection. We hold regular exhibitions at the City Art Gallery focusing on significant works such as pieces by David Cox, Benjamin Williams Leader and Stanhope Forbes.
However, only a small percentage of the collections are on display at any one time, the rest is packaged and stored safely in our Collections Storage facility – a treasure trove of social and industrial history, archaeology and art. Click the video to watch our Social History Curator’s overview of the store.
Researchers should contact email@example.com to arrange access to our collections store.
