The Worcestershire Soldier at The Commandery

What is the Worcestershire Soldier Gallery at The Commandery Project?

The Worcestershire Soldier at the Commandery will see a brand-new exhibition of Worcester’s regimental museum collections in four new permanent galleries at the Commandery.

The move will secure long-term access to Worcester’s military heritage and provide an opportunity to present the collections in new ways in the heart of the heritage quarter.

The project will display the collections of The Mercian Regiment Museum (Worcestershire) and the Worcestershire Yeomanry Museum in partnership with Worcester City Council.

The development of the project was funded by a grant of £243,200 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and £50,000 from the UK Government via the Townsfund, with significant in-kind support from the three project partners.

For the delivery of the project, The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded a grant of £1,045,122.

Delivery of the project will cost in the region of £1.3 million and Heritage Fund will cover 80% of this cost.

For the remaining costs, The Mercian Regiment Museum (Worcestershire) has committed £100,000 of its own funds and the Worcestershire Yeomanry has committed £5,000.

An active fundraising campaign is also underway to meet the project’s match funding target of £100,000. To date, £90,000 has been raised from grant making trusts, individual and corporate donations. There is £10,000 left to raise.

The regimental collections were displayed at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum from 1970 to 2025 with the most recent Worcestershire Soldier exhibition installed in 2003. The displays closed on 31 August 2025.

The move will secure long-term public access to the regimental collections, as well as bringing the Worcestershire Soldier’s story into the heart of the heritage quarter. It will provide an opportunity to connect with new audiences and redevelop the displays for a new generation.

We anticipate the new galleries will open in early 2028. We do not have an exact opening date at this time.

For those visiting the galleries as part of a visit to The Commandery usual admission charges will apply. Further information is here.

Discounted admission is available to any member of His Majesty’s Serving Armed Forces on production of a current British Army, Royal Navy or Royal Air Force identification card.

Please note there are discounts available to Worcester Residents.
