The Worcestershire Soldier at The Commandery

The Worcestershire Soldier at the Commandery will see a brand-new exhibition of Worcester’s regimental displays continuing to bring together the collections of the Mercian Regiment Museum (Worcestershire) and the Worcestershire Yeomanry Museum. The Worcestershire Soldier exhibition has been housed at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum since the 1970s with the current displays installed in 2003.

The museums keep the action, service and sacrifice of past veterans alive, not to be forgotten by future generations.

The move will secure the future of the gallery, as well as bringing The Worcestershire Soldier’s story into the heart of the heritage quarter and provide an opportunity to redevelop the current displays, which have been in place for over twenty years.

Visit The Worcestershire Soldier at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum until Sunday 31 August 2025.

The project partners are Mercian Regiment Museum (Worcestershire), the Worcestershire Yeomanry Museum and Museums Worcestershire.

The project has received a Development Phase grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund with additional support from the UK Government via the Townsfund and significant in-kind support from the two regimental museum partners and Museums Worcestershire.

Total funding to-date:

The two regimental museums have committed £103,000 in cash to the project. The Mercian Regiment Museum (Worcestershire) has committed £100,000 and the Worcestershire Yeomanry has committed £5,000.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded Development funding to-date of £243,200.
Townsfund funding amounts to £50,000.

An active fundraising campaign is also underway to support the development of the new exhibition at The Commandery with a target of £100,000 from grant making trusts, individual and corporate donations. There is just £33,770 left to raise.

The Worcestershire Soldier at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum will close on 31 August 2025.

The move will secure the future of the gallery, as well as bringing The Worcestershire Soldier’s story into the heart of the heritage quarter and provide an opportunity to redevelop the current displays, which have been in place for over twenty years.

We anticipate the new galleries will open in early 2028. We do not have an exact opening date at this time.

The Regimental Museums will not be charging for entrance to The Worcestershire Soldier and will not receive any financial receipt but the new display will sit within The Commandery, a paid-entry site operated by Museums Worcestershire.

Entry to The Worcestershire Soldier at The Commandery will be free for all serving members of the UK Armed Forces and all UK Service Veterans. Find out about veteran cards here.

For those visiting the galleries as part of a visit to The Commandery usual admission charges will apply. Further information is here.

Please note there are discounts available to Worcester Residents.
