[Online Exhibition] Skyscape

Due to our museum closures during this time, we have decided to bring our exhibitions online so you can stay connected with your local art & heritage. Visit the our Exhibitions section of the website here to take a digital wander through our galleries – including highlights from Skyscape, Mayflower 400 & Georgians exhibitions.

About the exhibition

Explore the sky and it’s representations in art: a symbol of the divine, a scientific subject, or a vehicle for emotional expression. Skyscape features works by Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt, Samuel Palmer, John Ruskin, Paul Nash and many others.

Showcasing over thirty objects on loan from the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, Skyscape celebrates five hundred years of artists’ fascination with the sky. Inspired by Constable’s famous statement that ‘It will be difficult to name a class of landscape in which the sky is not the key note, the standard of scale and the chief organ of sentiment’, Skyscape focuses on aerial rather than terrestrial landscapes in art.

This exhibition was due to run 4 April – 27 June 2020 and will be rearranged for a new set of dates when we reopen.
