SUMMARY:The Worcestershire Conquest Hoard – on display
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 11 January – Sunday 30 March 2025 | Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum\nIn October 2023 an extraordinary discovery was made near Bransford and Leigh, a village not far from Worcester in the shadow of the Malvern Hills: a pot filled with gold and silver coins, dating to the earliest years of Roman Britain.\nThe Worcestershire Conquest Hoard is one of the largest early Roman coin hoards ever found in Britain. It contains 1368 gold and silver coins, produced from the time of the Roman Republic (circa 509–27 BC) up to the reign of the emperor Nero (AD 54–68).\nThis temporary display is an exciting first look at the Hoard which Museums Worcestershire needs your help to keep in the county. ( https://www.museumsworcestershire.org.uk/support-us/worcestershire-heritage-art-museums-charity/worcestershire-heritage-art-museums-charity-worcestershire-conquest-hoard/ ) The exhibition explores the context and significance of the coins in relation to this tumultuous period of British history.\nFree to visit.\nAccess to the Art Gallery and Museum - lift unavailable\nThe Art Gallery and Museum is getting even better! Work is taking place from 2024 to 2027 to improve visitor facilities, introduce new displays and create brand-new galleries for the permanent collection.\nPlease note that as of Wednesday 8 January 2025 the lift will be unavailable while upgrade work is carried out. The lift will be unavailable until March 2025.\nDuring this period, access to the ground and first floors will be by stairs only.\nWe apologise that these improvements will temporarily limit access for some visitors and aim to complete the development as quickly as possible.\nPlease get in touch with the team if you have any questions before your visit or if we can help you with access by carrying buggies or walking aids:\n\nPhone: 01905 25371 ( tel:01905%2025371 ).\nEmail: gallerymuseum@museumsworcestershire.org.uk ( mailto:gallerymuseum@museumsworcestershire.org.uk ).\n\nFind out more about what’s in store and how this may affect your visit. ( https://www.museumsworcestershire.org.uk/museums/worcester-city-art-gallery-museum/improvements-to-worcester-city-art-gallery-and-museum-2024-2027/ )\n\n\nHelp us keep the Hoard in Worcestershire\nPlease help us to purchase this hoard of gold Iron Age and silver Roman denarii coins or they may become lost to Worcestershire forever. \nFind out more and donate today.\nThank you.\n
