SUMMARY:Exhibition opening day | Wyldgate Lane – A Walk Through Victorian Worcester
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 1 February 2025, 10am – 4pm | The Commandery\nCelebrate the first day of brand-new exhibition Wyldgate Lane – A Walk Through Victorian Worcester!\nDiscover Victorian life through a fictional backstreet based on Worcester’s very own history. You can get dressed up in Victorian costume, sweep a chimney, and pull a pint in the Victorian ‘Angel’ pub.\nOn the opening day, meet Victorian surgeon Kevin Goodman and hear all about the illnesses, diseases, cures and remedies from the time. He will demonstrate how people made medicines, along with a display of medical and surgical equipment, quack cures and dental instruments.\nTry your hand at rag rugging to add your touch to The Commandery’s opening day rug!\nThe Commandery is open from 10am – 4pm. Entry to the exhibition is included in general admission. Plan your visit.\nAbout the exhibition\nStep back in time to 1890 to explore the darker corners of Victorian life from birth and childhood to the funeral parlour and all the trials and tribulations faced in between.\nOn display are original items from the museum collections such as police uniform including truncheons and handcuffs, chemist’s medicine bottles, a funeral bier (a funeral director’s carriage pulled along by horses, which held the coffin) and original pub beer pumps.\nWyldgate Lane is imaginary but draws on the accounts and experiences of those living in the streets, lanes and back alleys immediately around The Commandery.\nRelated talks and events\nFamily mornings - Victorians in Worcester | Tuesday 18 - Thursday 20 February\nThis February half-term holiday, enjoy fun family mornings to celebrate the opening of The Commandery’s brand-new exhibition Wyldgate Lane – A Walk Through Victorian Worcester.\nPick up your rag rugging tools and learn how to make a rug, Victorian style! Then, create your very own thaumatrope, a toy popular in the 1800s that magically blends together two drawings. And (if you’re brave enough), play “what’s that whiff” to see if you can guess what all the pongy Victorian smells are!\n£5 per child + general admission. Find out more and book now.\n\nTalk - The Dreadful Diseases of Victorian Worcester, 1890-1900 | Saturday 1 March\nDespite being a city of wealth, during the Victorian period, many inhabitants of Worcester shared cramped, overcrowded homes, with poor access to clean water leading to the spread of several deadly diseases.\nIn this talk hosted in The Commandery’s beautiful medieval Great Hall, author and medical historian Kevin Goodman will explore what these diseases were and the treatment and medical care available to the people of Worcester at the time.\n£7. Find out more and book now.\n\nWorkshop - Rag Rugging Morning (ages 16+) | Saturday 22 March\nEnjoy a relaxing and creative morning at The Commandery inspired by new exhibition Wyldgate Lane – A Walk Through Victorian Worcester.\nLearn how to use traditional rag rugging tools and try out different techniques in a cosy morning of making.\nSip a tea, enjoy a coffee, and munch biscuits as you craft.\nAll resources supplied.
